Hi friends!
This week’s 5 selections are:
Memória da Pedra Mãe - Bardino (Jazzego, 2024)
#Contemporary Jazz
A haunting and deeply rooted journey through ancestral memory and sound. Merging traditional Portuguese folk elements with experimental textures, Bardino crafts an earthy, almost ritualistic atmosphere. Percussion, strings, and field recordings ground the album in the soil, while its spacious production invites quiet introspection. It's music that feels both ancient and current—an emotional excavation of identity, land, and time.
Saint Latin’s Day Massacre - Joe Bataan (Fania Records, 1972)
#Salsa #Latin Soul #Tropical #Boogaloo #Descarga #Cha-Cha #Funk
Wild, genre-bending ride through Latin soul, boogaloo, and streetwise funk with Joe’s vocals jumping between crooner charm and barrio swagger. Horn stabs, percussion breakdowns, and swirling organ riffs make this one a Nuyorican classic that still hits hard. Equal parts dancefloor heat and soulful storytelling, this is Joe Bataan at his most explosive.
Love Power - Annette Brissett (Wackie’s, 1983)
#Reggae #Lovers Rock
With Love Power, Annette Brissett taps into the golden glow of early ’80s lovers rock. Her vocals are tender but assured, gliding over mellow reggae rhythms with a quiet kind of confidence. It’s not showy—just deeply soulful, effortlessly charming, and built to soothe. Perfect for slow mornings, tender evenings, or whenever you need that gentle reggae hug.
Dreamer - Bobby Bland (Dunhill / ABC Records, 1974)
#Rhythm & Blues #Soul
I first heard Dreamer thanks to Jay-Z’s “Heart of the City,” which samples the title track of this album. Dreamer is pure bluesy soul, full of real, raw emotion but still really smooth. It’s something honest and easy to vibe with, perfect for a nice walk or just cruising.
Altera Vita - Alina Bzhezhinska & Tony Kofi (BBE, 2024)
#Spiritual Jazz #Modal #Contemporary Jazz
Calm down, reflect, enjoy some Pharoah Sanders vibes in its most chill form. Bzhezhinska’s harp and Kofi’s sax weave together in a calm, flowing dialogue, creating an atmosphere that’s meditative and engaging. Altera Vita offers the perfect balance of depth of spiritual jazz without its characteristic intensity.
That’s all for this week. I hope you enjoyed the selections.
Have a great weekend!
Stay groovy,
Dudier
