Hi friends!
Quick correction from the last post: Fishmans' King Master George was released by Media Remoras, not our beloved BBE.
This week’s 5 selections are:
Tears - Bibleway (B.W.C. Productions, 1977)
#Gospel #Modern Soul
On Sunday I got to meet the person behind Time Drift Records, a new label that just brought this incredible lost gem back to light. Tears is raw gospel soul that really hits—church energy all over it, with heavy keys, fat bass and vocals full of grit and feeling. Just pure emotion, straight from the heart 💛
Lô Borges - Lô Borges (Odeon, 1972)
#MPB #Psychedelic Rock #Folk Rock
The well-known debut of Lô Borges sounds young, with that unmistakable Clube da Esquina spirit—warm, a bit dreamy, never too clean. In fact, it was pressed around the same time he was working alongside Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes on their own opera prima. I come back to it when I want something quiet but full of life.
I’m Not Your Toy - Peter Barclay (Numero Group, 2023)
#R&B
Lo-fi drum machine soul with that basement-demo charm. Peter Barclay was a local legend in ’90s Oakland, and his soul comes through on every track. Sadly, he passed during the late-’90s AIDS epidemic. Numero Group’s reissue combines Acceptance (1990) and What Kind of World (1992), giving us a personal, unfiltered collection of handmade soul that sticks with you.
Star of Hope – Africa - Zion Train (The Wibbly Wobbly World Of Music, 2021)
#Dub #Reggae
Dub with a purpose! These unreleased 90s dubs are perfect whether you want to dance or just zone out, imagining yourself at a big dub station surrounded by friends. Grab them on Bandcamp and 100% of what you pay goes straight to supporting “Star Of Hope – Africa.”
The Star Of Hope Africa is a Non-Government, Non-partisan and Non-political Community based organisation from Entebbe, Uganda caring for street, orphaned, helpless and hopeless, children. Their aim is to address the challenges hindering less privileged children from achieving their full potential through mobilization and proper utilization of resources.
Sonny Stitt - Sonny Stitt (Argo, 1958)
#Bop #Jazz
One of many from Sonny Stitt, and it rolls smooth. He shifts between alto and tenor, backed by Ramsey Lewis on piano, with Eldee Young and Red Holt on rhythm—tight, no frills. It’s got that classic straight to the point club jazz vibe. Just groove and feel for the bop fans!
That’s all for this week. I hope you enjoyed the selections.
Have a great weekend!
Stay groovy,
Dudier
