Hi friends!
While getting ready for Moga Festival at Praia de Caparica in Lisbon, let’s enjoy this week’s 5 selections:
Heaven Sent - Space Ghost Feat. Teddy Bryant (Peoples Potential Unlimited, 2022)
#New Jack Swing #Soul #Funk
A captivating collaboration between producer Space Ghost and vocalist Teddy Bryant. This late 80s-style new jack swing / street soul homage delivers a sweet and soulful vocal performance alongside magical pads and warm basslines typical from the Oakland producer. You will instantly fall in love with the three tracks.
Blue Lines - Massive Attack (Wild Bunch / Virgin, 1991)
#Downtempo #Trip Hop
Massive Attack revolutionized the music scene with its groundbreaking fusion of dub, soul, funk, hip hop, acid jazz, and slowed-down rhythms, establishing themselves as pioneers of the trip hop genre. The album, considered the first trip hop masterpiece, showcased their innovative approach to music, filtering American hip hop through the lens of British club culture and setting the stage for the distinctive Bristol sound that would shape the 1990s.
Brasilian Skies - Masayoshi Takanaka (Kitty Records, 1978)
#Jazz Fusion #Latin Jazz
Japanese jazz fusion guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka felt inspired by the tropical theme and his admiration for Brazilian rhythms to produce this album. Among others, Takanaka collaborated with musicians like Haruko Kuwana, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jeff Porcaro and Paulinho da Costa; crafting a selection of tracks infused with bird calls, lively samba rhythms, sunny synths, and lush tropical acoustic guitar riffs, delivering a soulful and immersive musical experience.
Groove of ESSR II: Funk, Soul, Disco and Jazz from Estonia - Various Artists (Funk Embassy Records, 2023)
#Funk #Soul #Disco #Jazz
"Groove of ESSR II" is a compilation album that reflects Estonia's struggle under the occupation of Soviet Russia and the power of music as a means of escape and solace. Funk Embassy Records presents a diverse collection of tracks, some of which carry hidden meanings and others that offer a refuge on the dancefloor.
At Newport 1958 - Miles Davis (Columbia, 2001)
#Hard Bop #Jazz
Prepare to be captivated by the brilliance of the legendary Miles Davis Sextet at the Newport Jazz Festival, with an exceptional lineup featuring Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. The same lineup that would revolutionize the world of jazz, with a total different sound, releasing "Kind of Blue" just a year later. Moreover, I must admit that the art of the cover had a lot to do with choosing this record. Personally, I love how Miles dressed in each of his different musical periods, and this picture is a great example of his unique style and characteristic flow.
That was all for this week. I hope you enjoyed the selections :D
Tune in next week for more music!
Stay groovy,
Dudier
