Hi friends!
This week’s 5 selections are:
An Uplifting Celebration of House - MiNNA (My Analog Journal, 2023)
#Classic House #Garage House
When it comes to setting the dance floor on fire, London-based DJ MiNNA knows how it’s done. In this mix, she delivers a top-notch selection of classic vocal house tracks flawlessly blended into your ears. Including some of my all-time favorites by Kerri Chandler, Grant Nelson, and Los Hermanos, any other reference that I was previously unaware of has found its way straight onto my Discogs Wantlist :D
Today, MiNNA will be performing at Sala Villanos in Madrid.
Malaka - Ali (Anukara Records, 2023)
#Funk #Rock #Soul #Disco
Ali's Malaka blends Middle Eastern and Indonesian music, inspired by 70s Indonesian rock, soul, funk, disco, and afrobeat. Sung in Arabic, it reflects cultural exchanges between these regions, offering a modern interpretation of ancient traditions. Malaka promises a unique sonic journey, fusing diverse musical heritages. As they say, something that “can’t be found in any other parts of the globe”.
Sunday Coming - Alton Ellis (Coxsone Records / Bamboo, 1971)
#Reggae #Rocksteady #Ska
Alton Ellis, celebrated as one of Jamaica's top vocalists of the 1960s, likely backed by the Sound Dimension band under the direction of arranger Jackie Mittoo, offers a mix of original compositions and covers from the era. The full album is not complete on streaming services, leaving aside my favorite tracks, the opener “Joy In The Morning” and the closer “The Winner”. Luckily, you can listen to it on Bandcamp or Youtube. “The Winner” is a more optimistic take on Derrick Harriott's 1967 song "The Loser".
Peligro Amarillo / Dangerous Jazz - Dudier (Alter Disco, 2022)
#Free Jazz #Jazz Fusion #Other Mad Jazz Styles
Peligro Amarillo means Yellow Danger in Spanish. That’s what my uncle Jorge (in the picture, at the right, featuring Miles Davis’ head) used to say when he gave me an LP or a CD containing “dangerous jazz”. This vinyl mix is inspired by Jorge, with 5 songs coming from his record collection. Also, other 5 songs come from my father’s collection; who is one of my main influences in music.
🚧 Caution! Give full attention to the mix and enjoy the trip 🚧
Conferring With The Moon - William Ackerman (Windham Hill Records, 1986)
#New Age
Today we conclude with an introspective piece of art by the co-founder of one of my favorite labels, Windham Hill Records. In Conferring with the Moon, his guitar is accompanied by various instruments, including bass, lyricon, violin, English horn, piano, cello, charango, and zampona. A beautiful way to end your weekend.
That was all for this week. I hope you liked the selections :D
Stay groovy,
Dudier
