This week’s 5 selections are:
Huellas - Roberto Tempo (Radio Callao, 2023)
#Jazz #Jazz-Funk #Contemporary Jazz
Huellas, the new show on Radio Callao, kicks off with Spanish jazz expert Roberto Tempo at the helm. Roberto wears multiple hats, as a DJ, hifi bar owner, and club owner. He has established a reputation for hosting the best jazz concerts in Madrid and has brought a plethora of big names to the town, including Herbie Hancock, Marcos Valle, Avishai Cohen, Takuya Kuroda, and Alfa Mist, among others. In this episode, Roberto takes the audience on a jazz journey spanning generations, from the roots of the genre to the present day. Even if you don't speak Spanish, you won't have any trouble enjoying the wonderful selection of music presented by Roberto.
A Brazilian Love Affair - George Duke (Epic, 1980)
#Jazz #Jazz-Funk #Disco #Brazilian
The evolution of jazz fusion! Combining Brazilian music elements with Duke's jazz, funk, and R&B styles, the album features several Brazilian musicians and singers, including Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and Milton Nascimento. Duke was inspired to create it after touring Brazil in 1978 and falling in love with the country's music and culture. He said that he wanted to create an album that combined the Brazilian and American styles of music that he loved. One of those albums where each song is a hit, I was so happy when I found a dutch copy while digging in Amsterdam. Such a good and fresh feeling to be by the seaside. Summer breezin’.
Clin D’Oeil - Jazz Liberatorz (Kif Recordings, 2008)
#Jazzy Hip Hop
"A tribute to the golden age of hiphop, taking its strength from the roots of black music and more notably in jazz music." Jazz Liberatorz is a trio of French hip-hop producers (DJ Damage, Dusty and Mahdi) that created an extraordinary blend of jazz and hip-hop with their sampling techniques, beat production and the company of top notch musicians from the local underground scene. A curious thing about this album is the speeches delivered by the artists at the end of each song, introducing the next track while sharing their personal connection to jazz music in their lives and the music they create. Lots of good moments listening to this absolute delight...
A Hitech Jazz Compilation - Galaxy 2 Galaxy (Submerge Rec., 2005)
#House #Techno
WEEKEND!! Presented by Underground Resistance, the legendary Detroit-based musical collective, this compilation features tracks that are both high-energy and introspective. The use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments gives the album a futuristic feel, while jazz elements are infused into the electronic soundscape. This creates a perfect balance between energy and chill, with tunes that can get you up and dancing while others may take you on a sonic journey. A great representation of the unique sound and vision of UR. “Haga su transición”.
Previously Unavailable - Michael Franks (John Hammond Rec., 1973)
#Jazz-Rock
I would like to end with a recent discovery of one of my all-time favorite artists, and the one whose records I own the most (apart from Miles Davis). Previously Unavailable is a reissue of the album “Michael Franks” from the early 1970s. While this album may not be representative of Michael Franks' classic work, I find marvelous its country-rock California flavor. The whole record tells a story of a young artist leaving home and finding his way in the world, with songs that touch on themes of self-discovery, confidence, and the challenges and rewards of pursuing one's passions. Happy weekend!
That was all for this week. I hope you enjoyed the selections :D
Tune in next week for more music!
Stay groovy,
Dudier
