This week’s 5 selections are:
Me Estás Haciendo Mal - Vinocio (Self-Released, 2021)
#R&B #Hip Hop #Argentina
Vinocio is a project hailing from La Lucila, Buenos Aires, formed by Lucien Memi and Fermín Carpena. Now available on vinyl thanks to Wide Awake, the label of electronic music producer Felipe Gordon. In Felipe’s words, Me Estás Haciendo Mal “has the D’Angelo vibe, it’s jazzy, classy and masterful, this album was never edited on vinyl, so for the first time we are presenting the opportunity to own this piece of Latin America’s / Argentina’s modern music.”
Num Dia Azul - Minas (Blueazul Records, 1983)
#Bossa Nova #MPB #Samba #Latin Jazz
After 33 years since its initial release, Patricia and Orlando decided to reissue their very sought-after album, a gem desired by many crate diggers. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, we can now feel the warmth of their sound on vinyl. Num Dia Azul is best enjoyed during breakfast with your closest friends, or at least that’s how I first experienced it when my friends Víctor and Joana played it at my place. It beautifully captures the colorful and tropical spirit of Brazilian happiness.
Future Listening! - Towa Tei (Güt / For Life Records, 1994)
#Shibuya-Kei #Downtempo #Future Jazz #Club Jazz #House
This is one of the earliest underground downtempo forays into the Shibuya-Kei style. Japanese music producer Towa Tei employed samples from jazz, hip hop, and Brazilian music, alongside organic instrumentation layered over electronic beats. For the human touch, he relied on a large and diverse array of collaborators, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, Bebel Gilberto, and Arto Lindsay, among others.
Monument - Beggar & Co. (RCA, 1981)
#Britfunk #Boogie #Disco #Jazz-Funk
I'm a huge fan of these guys. Kenny Wellington, David Baptiste, and Neville 'Breeze' McKrieth formed Beggar & Co. after the split of Light of the World (another great band!). "(Somebody) Help Me Out" and "Mule (Chant No.2)" are among my most played singles. The blend of upbeat, naive vocals with a badass, groovy jazz-funk rhythm just makes me want to jump in my car and cruise with the windows down. Such a fantastic album to blast through the streets!
Interstellar Space - John Coltrane (Impulse!, 1974)
#Free Jazz #Avant-Garde Jazz #Dangerous Jazz!
Let’s conclude with something transcendental and sublime; music of great power. The concept is simple: one sax player, one drummer. The legendary John Coltrane and Rashied Ali met at Van Gelder Studio in 1967 to record a dialogue full of emotion and improvisation. Each piece starts and ends with bells rung by John, highlighting the spiritual character of his final albums and its alternation between peace and chaos. Apparently, the encounter was a total surprise for Ali, who did not know what they were going to play and was even unaware they were performing as a duet. The record was cut in a single take…
That was all for this week. I hope you liked the selections :D
Stay groovy,
Dudier
