Hi friends!
This week’s 5 selections are:
John Gómez and Nick the Record Present TANGENT - VA (Mr Bongo, 2024)
#Boogie #Dub #House #Electronic #Brazilian
Selectors and musical connoisseurs John Gómez and Nick The Record have done a fantastic job curating this compilation of boogie, world, and dubby tracks that sound as fresh as this summer’s sea breeze. The album captures the essence of their London party, Tangent, named after “the spontaneous switches in musical direction that are a defining element of their nights”. This is probably my favourite compilation, right up there with Ed Motta’s Too Slow To Disco Brasil. Don’t sleep on this one!
Spiritual Love - Urban Species (Talkin’ Loud, 1993)
#Acid Jazz #Hip Hop
In my late teen years, my uncle Gorri introduced me to this exceptional British acid jazz band through their first LP, Listen. The track I always had on repeat was “Spiritual Love.” Its beautiful message of empathy and love, the smooth vocals and the ragga-style MCing, really captivated me. This month, after not listening it for years, I rediscovered the track and found the Maxi-Single containing heavenly remixes, like the CJ Mackintosh Full Length Remix, with its celestial chords and new jack swing kind of beat.

Agustin Pereyra Lucena - Agustin Pereyra Lucena (Tonodisc, 1970)
#Bossanova #Latin Jazz
At the beginning of the year, Far Out Recordings reissued this gem by the Brazilophile Argentinian guitarist Agustin Pereyra Lucena. Vinicius De Moraes described Lucena as being as connected to his instrument as Baden Powell and Toquinho, a connection he claimed to have never seen before in other musician. Accompanying Lucena are Mario "Mojarra" Fernandez (bass) and Enrique "Zurdo" Roizner (drums), whom Agustin first spotted when they backed Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho, and Maria Creuza on their legendary La Fusa live album.
Universal Love (4hero Remix) - 4hero (Reinforced Records / Selector, 1995)
#Jungle #Drum n Bass
This track was originally released in 1995 along with other remixes in a rather obscure EP. Later, in 2008, Reinforced Records reissued it in an album featuring more early songs by the London duo. Among all the tracks, this one is my pick because it is the most subtle and faithful to the original mix, while also anticipating the shift towards a more future jazz sound that would take place three years later with their following record, Two Pages.
Atlantis - McCoy Tyner (Milestone, 1975)
#Jazz #Post Bop #Spiritual Jazz
Recorded live in San Francisco, the songs on Atlantis are energetic and filled with solos by McCoy Tyner and the rest of the band: saxophonist Azar Lawrence, bassist Juini Booth, drummer Wilby Fletcher, and percussionist Guilherme Franco. Azar’s style closely resembles that of John Coltrane, with whom McCoy recorded A Love Supreme ten years earlier. This album exudes the same spiritual vibe that characterizes that highly praised record.
That was all for this week. I hope you liked the selections :D
Stay groovy,
Dudier
