Hi friends!
Last week, I recorded the first video DJ set of the series that I'll be hosting at the More Music, Less Words headquarters in Madrid. I'm thrilled to introduce More Music, Less Words: Sessions. The idea here is to record vinyl mixes by different artists. So, if you would like to pass by, just send me a DM with your proposal :D
On Thursday I traveled to Lisbon to play some music back-to-back with our friend and great selector Víctor Sias at Mīrārī. The weekend was packed with musical discoveries, rediscoveries, and dj sets. In this post I'm highlighting just a few that meant the most to me.
This week’s 5 selections are:
Hip House & Other Classic Vocal House Delights - Dudier (More Music, Less Words Sessions, 2024)
#House #Hip House #Garage House #Italo House #Euro House
For this inaugural set, I aimed to blow off some dust from classic house records that I enjoy collecting and dancing to. As the title suggests, there's a strong component of Hip House here, kicking off with Mellow Man Ace's cheeky rhymes and featuring other artists like Kamikaze or Deep State II. I've even included a house mix of Miles Davis' "Blow," whose original version was featured on his last studio album, Doo-Bop, a jazz and hip hop fusion. Fun fact: Miles is present at every moment of the set, in the painting in the background, and will surely be pleased to hear the future DJs I hope to collaborate with.
Steps Ahead - Steps Ahead (Elektra Musician, 1983)
#Post-Bop #Jazz Fusion
I arrived in Lisbon at my friend Víctor’s place and gave him a US pressing of Steps Ahead's debut studio album. It features Mike Mainieri on vibes, Michael Brecker on tenor sax, Eddie Gomez on bass, Peter Erskine on drums, and marks pianist Eliane Elias' first appearance on a record. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the band opted to venture beyond the classic 4/4 swing, experimenting with various patterns where every musician shined prominently.
Wave - Antonio Carlos Jobim (A&M Records, 1967)
#Bossa Nova #Latin Jazz
After a copious lunch and some wine, we went for a little digging. When I told Víctor that I didn’t yet own this all-time classic by Tom Jobim, he didn’t hesitate to buy it for me and wrote a dedication on the cover. This is the third album published by Creed Taylor when he started his own CTI venture under A&M Records, alongside his eternal job partner, engineer Rudy Van Gelder. With an extensive personnel playing Tom’s compositions under the arrangements of Claus Ogerman, his guitar and piano find the perfect atmosphere to settle. A complete feel-good record, suitable for many moments and occasions, that transports your soul to a distant land full of joy and peace.
Bones Radio - Dudier & Sias (2024)
#Jazz #MPB #Rock #World Music #Disco #House #Electro #Britfunk
We concluded our afternoon at Bones Records, situated within the LX Factory complex, where Godi invited us to record a radio show. We played tracks by Idris Muhammad, Don Beto, Leila Pinheiro, Steve Winwood, Newen Afrobeat, Rosinha de Valença, Armando, MAW, Freeez, and others.
Note: In the first song and briefly during the set, the signal in the right channel is muted. However, Godi quickly fixes the issue!
Gabinete Now ! - Gabinete Now ! (Stiletto, 1991)
#Hip House #House #Downtempo
Let’s close the weekend with more hip house. On Friday, we went to pay a visit to our good friend (and Guest Selector) Dinho’s record store Coco Discos. Among loads of fresh finds, Víctor got a copy of this marvelous Brazilian rare house album, which later he played at Mīrārī. Luckily, we can enjoy 5 out of 8 tracks that are available on Youtube!
That was all for this week. I hope you liked the selections :D
Stay groovy,
Dudier
